Four original compositions. Recorded live with a 60-piece orchestra.
Welcome! I’m Eric Turnnessen — a composer who tells cinematic stories through the power of orchestral music.
This project documents my second recording session with the Northern Film Orchestra. In a single day we recorded four pieces spanning more than two decades of my writing — from early piano compositions to music written for film and documentary. The session brought together a 60-piece orchestra to perform these works live, capturing the energy of musicians interpreting the music in real time.
This virtual concert presents the full recording session as a continuous performance. Each piece is introduced with a short story about its origin before transitioning into footage of the orchestra performing the music.
After releasing the virtual concert, people shared some beautiful responses. Hearing how the music moves others is one of the most meaningful parts of the process.
The music from this session was also released as a 21-minute orchestral album capturing the performances exactly as they were recorded.
If you’d like to explore the music in more depth, I’ve created a collection of posts that dive deeper into each piece from this recording session. These posts share the stories behind the compositions, notes on instrumentation and orchestration, and downloadable full scores for anyone who wants to follow the music on the page.
This project would not have been possible without the generous creativity, care, and support of everyone involved. I’m deeply grateful for each contribution that brought my music to life.
